ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR  2014-15

 

Esteemed President of our annual day celebration function, Sri K.Abhayachandra, our distinguished Chief Guest of this morning Sri Krishna Mohan P.S., our Alumni representative Mr.Brij Mohan, esteemed members of our Management, Heads and faculty members of all the Institutions in the campus, beloved colleagues, members of Press & Media, office bearers of the Students Council, office bearers and members of Alumni Association, my dear students, ladies and gentlemen. I am privileged to present before you this Annual Report of our Polytechnic for the academic year 2014-15.

S.N.Mudbidri Polytechnic, named after great Philanthropist Late S.N.Mudbidri, was established in the year 1984 with a noble intension of providing technical education to the deprived rural youth to alleviate poverty of this region through socio-economic development. This Polytechnic is managed jointly by S.M.C Trust, Moodbidri and The Academy of General Education, Manipal.

This Polytechnic is affiliated to the Board of Technical Examinations, Bangalore and is one of the reputed Polytechnics in our State. All the Diploma Courses offered here are approved by AICTE, New Delhi.

Our Polytechnic offers three year’s Diploma courses in disciplines namely, Automobile, Electronics & Communication, Electrical & Electronics, Computer Science, Mechanical, Civil, and Mechatronics Engineering.  Out of these 7 Diploma Courses three courses namely Automobile, E&C Engg and E&E are govt. aided Courses.

 

Admissions:

The admissions for the first year Doploma in the unaided Courses for filling up the management seats were made in our Polytechnic during the months of May, June 2014 in our Polytechnic. Admissions for the aided courses were made through online counseling at the nodel Centre. 175 students were admitted to the Govt. aided courses. 188 students were admitted to the unaided courses. 16 I.T.I passed students were admitted to second year Dipoma under lateral entry. The total student strength of our Polytechnic for this academic year is 923.

 

Staff Strength:          

We have all necessary infrastructures, including trained and experienced faculty members.  At present 31 B.E. graduates, 1 science graduate, 5 post graduates, 1 doctorate, 5 diploma holders in the cadre of Lecturers, 7 diploma holders in the cadre of Instructors, 2 Junior Instructors, 1 Mechanic, 1 diploma holder in the cadre of System Administrator, 1 Librarian and 27 supporting staff altogether 82 permanent staff members are working here. 11 backlog vacancies were filled during the end of last academic year and the approval is obtained from the Dept. of Higher education, Govt. of Karnataka.

  

Retirement/ Resignations:

I recognize the services of Ms.Preethi, Ms. Akshatha N.M., and Mr. Ramesh Rao B. who have left our institution during this academic year.

 

Appointments:

On this occasion I would like to welcome the staff members namely Mr.Kumareshwar Rathod, Mr. Kiran Y., Ms.Shobha A., Mr. Guruprasad R., Mr.Harsha, Rajesh R., Ms.K.Meenakshi, Mr.Sunil Mera, Mr.Gangadhara K.B., Ms.Vedavathi, Ms.Gulabi, Ms.Supriya S., Mr.Nalina Kumar P., who have joined our institution during this academic year .

 

Laboratories & Workshops:-

We have well equipped workshops and laboratories in all the departments. As per the A.I.C.T.E. norms separate computer laboratories are set up for each Department. All the necessary equipments have been procured.  To tune ourselves to the changing technology our laboratories are updated and equipped by providing additional laboratory equipments worth Rs.9,53,722/- during the year under report.  Language laboratory is set up for the use of both staff and students.  

  

Library:

At present we have 11149 volumes of technical books.  We have purchased text books for our library and reading room worth Rs.15,060/-during this academic year. In addition to the text books, 26 national and international technical journals, several technical and non magazines, Kannada, English and Malayalam newspapers and monthly/ fortnightly magazines are also provided for the use of our staff & students.  Book bank facility is available in our library for the use of our students. We extend the facility of drawing boards to all the students. A Photocopier is installed in our library for the use of our staff and students.

Students’ performance in the semester examinations:

In the even semester examinations held during April/ May 2014 out of 800  students appeared for the examinations  111  students passed with Distinction 269 students passed in I Class, and 37 students passed in II Class, and 271 students were promoted to 2nd, 4th and 6th semester classes, and the overall percentage is 86% .

In the odd semester examinations held during November / December 2014 out of 910 students appeared for the examinations 123 students passed with Distinction, 311 students passed in I Class, 63 students passed in II Class.

 

Achievements/ activities of staff members:

  • Dr. S P Gurudas, Guruprasad Prabhu, Varun Kumar, Kumareshwar Rathod, Gangadhara K B, Harsha, Kiran Y, Suresh D B, Vinayachandra, R.Ganeshan have undergone trainings during this academic year on various topics at Mangalore, Bangalore and NITTTR, Chennai.
  • Sri Dhavalakeerthi, H.O.D. of Electrical & Electronics Engineering and Smt.Noronha Tarina Rita, Lelcturer in E&E Engg are nominated as staff representatives for the Governing Council of S.N.M.Polytechnic, for a period of two years on rotation.

Students’ activities and achievements:-

  • The Annual Day Celebrations for the year 2013-14 was held on 15th March 2014. Dr.G.K.Prabhu, Registrar, Manipal University was our Chief Guest.   Mr. Krishna Anand M. K. represented our Alumni. Sri K.Abhayachandra, Chairman, presided over the function.
  • The inaugural function of the activities of Innovation Club and other Clubs was held on 12th August 2014. Sri M.Annappa Pai, Director, ACE Foods Pvt Ltd, Mangalore inaugurated the activities of the Innovation & other Clubs. Dr.L.C.Soans, renowned Agri Scientist and member of Governing Council presided over.  Sri ShrikanthPai K., Director, ACE Foods Pvt Ltd, Mangalore was the Chief Guest.
  • As part of the curriculum the final year Diploma students of Automobile Engineering, accompanied by faculty members visited various industries in Bangalore and Mysore during the first week of September 2014.
  • On the occasion of Teachers’ Day Celebrations our Students’Council members organized few competitions and entertainment programmes to the staff members. On this occasion, a Yakshagana programme on the topic “Kamsa Vadhe” was rendered by Sri Gopalakrishna K.S., Lecturer in Civil Engg and a team of staff and students.
  • Our students participated in the Do it Yourself Competition organized jointly by Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Engineers’ Association and the Institute of Engineers (India), held at Bejai, Mangalore on 15th September 2014. Our students bagged both first and second place in the competition.
  • Ayudha Pooja was celebrated on 1st October 2014. On this occasion Department wise Mantap Decoration Competitions were held to the students of all branches. In the Mantap Decoration Competitions, Department of Automobile Engineering secured 1st prize, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, & Department of Mechanical Engineering secured second & third prizes respectively.
  • As a part of their syllabus, 47students of final year Diploma in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, accompanied by two faculty members visited the Varahi Hydro Electric power project on 7th October 2014.
  • As a part of the syllabus, 34 students of final year Diploma in Electronics & Communication Engineering accompanied by two faculty members visited various industries at Bangalore and Mysore between 18th to 20th January 2015.
  • A batch of 31 students of final year Diploma in Electrical & Electronics Engg branch accompanied by faculty members visited various industries of Mysore, Bangalore and Mandya Districts between 10th to 13th February 2015.
  • Talents Day Competition was held on 27th February 2015 for the students of all the 7 branches. Department of Automobile Engg, Department of Mechanical Engg, and Dept of Computer Science Engineering secured first, second and third prizes respectively.

 

  Extensive Survey Project:

As per the curriculum, sixth semester students of Civil Engineering, have taken up an extensive survey project near Shri Harihareshwara Temple, Durga, Karkala, from 3rd December to 11th December 2014. 47 students accompanied by four faculty members of Department of Civil Engineering have successfully conducted the survey camp.

 

Technical Project Exhibition Competititon held:

The Innovation Club of S.N.M.Polytechnic organised Kaushalyam-2015, a Technical Project Exhibition in our Polytechnic on 23rd and 24th February 2015.  More than 100 innovative technical models prepared by our students of seven different disciplines focused on agriculture, irrigation and other rural requirements were exhibited. We had invited the students of local High Schools to view these projects. More than 1000 High School students visited this exhibition. Meticulous planning and arrangements were made under the leadership of Dr. S.P.Gurudas, coordinator, innovation club.


Achievements in Sports & Games:

Annual Sports meet for this academic year was held at G.V.Pai Memorial Stadium on Saturday, the 28th February 2015. Sri B.Srikanth Kamath, Managing Partner, Sri Navadurga Industries, inaugurated the Sports Meet. I would like to thank Sri B.S.Patil, Lectuer, Dept. of Commerce, Sri Dhananjaya Shetty, Principal, and the students of M.K.Anantharaj D.P.Ed. for their kind co-operation during the sports meet. 

I place on record the services of Mr. Imran Khan A, Lecturer in English, and Mr. Rohith Kumar, Instructor, Dept of Mechanical Engg for shouldering the responsibilities of conduction of all sports activities.

 

N.S.S Activities:-

The activities N.S.S.Unit and Youth Red Cross Unit of S.N.M.Polytechnic were inaugurated by Dr.B.A.Yathikumar Swamy Gowda, Principal, Alvas’ College of Nursing, on Friday, the 22nd August 2014.  Sri Dheerendra Jain, N.S.S.Programme Officer, Alvas’ College of Nursing, was the Chief Guest.  Regular activities of N.S.S were held in the premises.

Additional unit of N.S.S. with 50 volunteers is sanctioned to our Polytechnic from this academic year. Sri. Varun Kumar, Lecturer, Dept. of Mechatronics Engineering is appointed as the programme officer for this additional unit.

Annual Special Camp of N.S.S. Units held at Shirthady:

Annual N.S.S Special Camp was held from 6th to 12th December 2014 at Holy Angel’s/ Mount Carmel School premises, Shirthady. Sri. S D Sampath Samrajya, Deputy Chairman, Governing Council inaugurated the camp.

The valedictory function of this annual special camp was held on 12th December 2014. Rev.Fr.Francis Crasata, Parish Priest, Mount Carmel Church, & Correspondent of Holy Angels/Mount Carmel Institutions, Shirthady delivered the valedictory speech.

 

Blood Donation Camp:

The Youth Red Cross Unit and the N.S.S.Units of S.N.M.Polytechnic had organized a Blood Donation Camp in our Polytechnic on 3rd March 2015, in co-operation with blood bank, K.M.C. Mangalore. 170 sachet of blood was collected from staff and student donors. The entire expenses of the camp were funded by one of our well wisher of our Polytechnic, Sri. Rajendra Pai.

 

Seminars and Conferences held:-

  • A Guest Lecture on the topic “Application of Electronics in the Automobiles” organized by the Automobile  Club- “ ENVATO” was held in our polytechnic during the 2nd week of October 2014.  Sri K. P. Prasad, Principal S.D.M Technical Institute Polytechnic was the resource person.
  • A Faculty Motivation Programme was held in our Polytechnic on Saturday, the 17th January 2015 to all the faculty members. The session was conducted by Sri Suresh Bhat, Adviser, STEP, NITK and Dr.Mohith P.Tahilian, Asst. Professor, Deparment of C.S.E., N.I.T.K., Suthkal.
  • A seminar in Kannada on the topic “¨sÁgÀwÃAiÀÄ ¸ÀA¸ÀÌöÈwAiÀÄ ¥ÀæwÃPÀ- ¸Áé«Äà «ªÉÃPÁ£ÀAzÀ ” organisaed by the N.S.S. Units on 6th February 2015 by Dr. S.P.Gurudas, Lecturer in E&C Engineering

 

Naional Festivals held in the Campus:

Independence day and republic day celebrations were held in the campus. All our staff members and students attended the celebrations.

 

Free Midday Meal Facility:

57 economically poor and deserving students from all branches are provided with free mid-day meals.  We have received generous financial assistance of Rs.72740/- from the well wishers of our Polytechnic towards this noble cause. The following are the donors for this free midday meal facility.

Generous Donations Received:

Our old students, Mr.Jeethesh Jain has donated Rs.10000/-  and Mr. Vishwanath Shetty has donated Rs.15000 towards Kaushalyam 2015, a Technical Model Project Exhibition held in our Polytechnic during February 2015.

 

Donation towards the medical treatement by the staff & students:

Miss. Rashmi, a student of I P.U.C. at Sri Mahaveera Pre University College, was suffering with a brain tumor. The staff and students of S.N.M.Polytechnic, Sri Mahaveera P.U.College and Sri Mahaveera First Grade College contributed Rs.50000/- collectively for the treatment.

 

Scholarships:                                                                                                                 

The Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation Ltd., Bangalore has sanctioned an educational loan of Rs.5,000/- to a student belonging to minority community.

 

  • The Taluk Social Welfare Officer, Mangalore has sanctioned Govt of India Post Matric Scholarship of Rs.33,710/-  towards the scholars belonging to Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe.
  • During this academic year  270 students of our Polytechnic have applied to the Department of Backward Communities, Govt of Karnataka, for the financial assistance for the food & accommodation, fees concession under the “ Vidya Siri Yojana” Scholarship Scheme of Govt of Karnataka.
  • K.C. Mahindra Education Trust, Mumbai has sanctioned a scholarship of Rs.10,000/- per annum to All India Talent Scholarship for the Diploma Courses. Ms. Akshatha A., of first year E&E Engg will receive this scholarship every year.
  • About 244 students have submitted applications to the Labour Welfare Organisaton, Bangalore through our Polytechnic for the sanction of Beedi Scholarships for this academic year.

  • A Cash prize of Rs.5,000/-  each to 6 students,who have scored 100% marks in Mathematics in both First and Second semesters during the academic year 2013-14, which amounts to Rs.30,000/-. 
  • A Cash prize of Rs.1000/- each to 8 students, who have scored 100% marks in Mathematics in one semester (First/ Second) examination, which amounts to Rs.8,000/-.
  • I would like to mention congratulate here that one of our I year Automobile students, Naveen Shivananda Moger has scored 100% marks in both Applied Mathematics and Applied Science subjects in the first semester exam held during Nov-Dec 2014.
  • Smt. Sowmya M.J., Librarian has sponsored Cash Prize of Rs.3000/- to be given to three meritorious students of first year Diploma students, based on their academic performance.
  • Sri Suresh D.B., Lecturer, Automobile Engineering has sponsored cash prizes of Rs.3000/- to three students, one of first year and two students of third year Automobile Engineering for securing highest marks in his subjects Automotive Engines and Machine design.
  • Sri Suresh D.B., Lecturer, Automobile Engineering has sponsored another Cash prize of Rs.1000/- to a student securing the highest aggregate marks from first to 5th semester altogether.

Placement assistance to the Diploma holders through Campus selection/ interviews:

Campus recruitment drives are held for the employment of students of this Polytechnic regularly. M/S Thought works had conducted a pre-placement talk for our students on 19th Dec. 2014 .Our students have attended a pooled campus interview by Interflex held on 19th February 2015 at Karnataka Polytechnic, Mangalore.

Maintenance of discipline: -

  • Utmost precautions have been taken for the maintenance of discipline in this institution.  As per the direction of Govt. of Karnataka we have formed various Committees for the maintenance of disciplince in the institution.
  • Anti-sexual Harrassment Committee is formed to protect women against sexual abuse or any such menaces in the campus.
  • Anti- Ragging Committee is formed to curb ragging in the campus. Every student is made to give an undertaking in this regard.
  • In order to proactively take up women’s issues to ensure safe, and secure women friendly atmosphere in the institutiton, we have established a Committee on Women’s Security, Welfare and Grievance Redressal.   
  • An Ombudsman Grienvance Committee is formed in our Polytechnic.
  • A committee for dress code is formed in the Polytechnic. Members of this committee oversee the dress code.

 

College Cafeteria:

As per the norms of the A.I.C.T.E., New Delhi, a cafeteria is set up in the Campus. A Committee comprising of staff members and student representatives is formed to monitor and take appropriate actions to provide quality, hygienic food and beverages at nominal price.

 

Clean Campus Campaign:

To address the cleanliness issues in the campus and outside the campus we have organized “clean campus drive” from this academic year. Students of every department engage themselves minimum of one hour per week, Monday to Saturday in this drive. Thanks to the Town Municipality for the disposal of collected waste. This drive is initiated with a noble intension of forming a habit among students rather than a mere custom. I appreciate all the students and staff for actively engaging themselves to keep our surroundings clean.

 

S.N.M.P Alumni Association:

 Most of our old students are well settled.  These old students mirror our Polytechnic at the world of work. These students have formed an alumni association which is very active. We had Mr. Krishna Anand M K, as our Alumni representative during our Annual Celebration held on 15th March 2014. Today’s Alumni Representative Mr. Brij Mohan is also an active member of this Alumni Association. We had organized an interaction session between Mr. Brij Mohan and our students to make the students have a feel of industry practices.
