Esteemed President of our annual day celebration function, Sri K.Abhayachandra Jain, Our distinguished Chief Guest of this morning, Sri K Lakshminayaraya, Members of the Management, Heads of other Institutions of the campus, beloved colleagues, members of Press & Media, office bearers of the Students Council, my dear students, ladies and gentlemen, I am privileged to present before you this 24th annual report of our institution for the academic year 2007-08 on this occasion.

S.N.M.Polytechnic named after the great Philanthropist Late S.N.Mudbidri, was established in the year 1984 and is managed jointly by SMC Trust, Moodbidri and The Academy of General Education.

Academy of General Education, Manipal

Our Polytechnic offers three year’s diploma courses in various fields namely, Automobile Engg., Electrical & Electronics Engg, Electronics & Communication Engg., Computer Science & Engg., Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engg., and Mechatronics Engineering. I thank our Management for making it possible to start the new branch in Mechatronics Engg and to the A.I.C.T.E, New Delhi for the permission to start this new branch in engineering from this academic year.

Admissions:

As the Govt.of Karnataka has taken steps to include our Polytechnic under Grant-in-aid Code from this academic year, the admissions for the first year Diploma courses in Automobile Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Electrical & Electronics Engineering were made through centralized admissions at nodal centre, Karnataka Polytechnic, Mangalore from 7th July to 25th July 2007 with a reservation of 80% seats for meritorious students.

Orientation Programme:

The orientation programmes were held from 2nd July 2007 to 5th July 2007 for the first year Diploma students. National level trainers Sri Rajendra Bhat, Sri Purushothama Ithal, and Sri Sadananda Navda were the resource persons. They delivered motivation addresses to the students on the opportunities to the diploma holders and on personality development. All the I year students attended this program.

Students’ strength:

This year 376 students have been admitted to the first year Diploma, 265 and 165 students are admitted to the second and final year Diploma respectively. The total strength of students studying in our institution as on date is 806.

Staff Strength:

This Polytechnic is affiliated to the Board of Technical Examinations, Bangalore and is one of the reputed Polytechnics in our State. We have all necessary infrastructures, including trained and qualified faculty members. At present 33 B.E. graduates, 4 post graduates and 6 Diploma holders in the cadre of Lecturers, 8 diploma holders in the cadre of Instructors, 3 Junior Instructors, 1 Mechanic, 1Physical Director, and 19 supporting staff altogether 60 staff members are permanently working in our Polytechnic. Besides them 4 Part time Lecturers are also rendering their services. All the staff members are working hard for the success of our institution.
 
Appointments:

On this occasion, I would like to welcome faculty members namely Mr. Dony Armstrong D Souza, Mr. Ashok K.V., Miss. Bhavani Priyadarshini, Miss. Rashmi S.Rao, Mr. Ganesh Bhat P.V., Mrs. Madhu.G.Balavalamatti, Mr. Godwin Pereira, Miss.Nimitha K.S., Mr.Ramprasad M., Mr. Krishnappa, Mr. Johnson K., Mr.Loyed Preetham D Souza, Mr.Shamith Rao (Physical Director), Mohammed Fazal (System Administrator), R.P.Narayan and Prasad who have joined this institution during this academic year.

Retirement/ Resignations:

I recognize the services of Miss.Ranjitha R, Mr.Dinesha A.S, Miss.Asha D, Mrs.Shubhalatha, Mr. Vishnumoorthy H., Mr.Ganesh Mogeraya P, Sri P.Veerendra Kumar, Sri Jayaprakash Wilfred Pinto, Mr. Arun Kumar H., Mr. Pavan Kumar A, who have left our institution for various reasons. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

Laboratories & Workshops:

We have well equipped workshops and laboratories in all the departments. All the necessary equipments have been procured as per A.I.C.T.E. norms. To tune ourselves to the new technology our laboratories are updated by providing additional laboratory equipments worth Rs.50,91,055/-. We have purchased and set up wheel alignment, wheel balancing and automatic tyre changing equipment worth Rs.10,00,000 during the month of March 2007. This equipment is installed for the use of our students. This equipment also caters to the needs of the public. We have erected 10 Lathe machines in the laboratories which were purchased during this academic year at a cost of Rs. 4,85,000/-. We have purchased a printer/digital copier with a cost of Rs.80000, a Fax machine costing Rs.6500, water
purifiers and coolers worth Rs.85,500. During this academic year we have provided Computers to all the departments for carrying out the academic activities. The office automation is done by installing 4 new computers in the office. On behalf of my colleagues and students, I thank the Management for their kind sanction and for the release of funds required to provide these excellent facilities.

Library:

A good library facility is available for the benefit of staff and students of this Polytechnic. At present we have 7982 volumes of technical books. This year we have purchased text books worth Rs.63,726/-. In addition to the text books, technical journals, technical magazines, Kannada, English and Malayalam newspapers and monthly/ fortnightly magazines are also provided for the use of staff & students to update their knowledge. During the last academic year we have subscribed to the technical monthly and fortnightly magazines in English namely, PC Quest, EFY, IT, Down to Earth, Engineering Advances, Electrical Engg Update, and Industrial Products Finder Online. A book bank facility is available in our library for the use of our students. We extend the facility of drawing boards to all the students.

Students’ performance in the Odd Semester (Nov/Dec) 2007 Examinations:

The students of this Polytechnic have marked excellent performance in the semester examinations held during November/ December 2007. I feel proud to announce that out of 795 students appeared for their first/ third / fifth semester examinations 77students have passed in First Class with Distinction, 291students have passed in First Class, 50 students have passed in Second Class and remaining students have been promoted.

Achievements in extra- curricular activities:

Our students have participated in the elocution and Essay competitions held on 15th August 2007, on the occasion of Independence Day.

Our students have participated in the State level cultural competition “Samskritika Habba” held at Mysore on 29th and 30th August 2007, and they have secured second prize.

Our students have participated in the Technical quiz competition organized by Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu Engineers Assoicaton, Mangalore held on 9th September 2007 at Mangalore and our team has won I place in the Quiz competitions.

Our students have participated in the “Do it yourself” Competitions organized by Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kodagu Districts Engineers’ Association held at Mangalore, on the occasion of ‘Engineers Day’ on 15th September 2007. The models prepared by our students secured Second place.

Our students have participated in the cultural competitions organized by Sarvajanika Sri Ganeshotsava Samithi, Moodbidri, and secured II prize. Our students have bagged special prizes for their performance in the individual competitions.

Our students have organized few special fun games to the teaching staff members on 5th September 2007 on the occasion of “Teachers Day Celebrations”. All the teaching staff members participated in this event. As a part of the syllabus the final year diploma students of all branches have visited various industries in Bangalore, Mysore and outside the State. I am happy to mention and would like to express our gratitude to the officials of the various organizations/ industries for extending their permission and co-operation to our students during these visits.
 
The Electronics Club, Mechanical Association, and Electrical Club members meet during their leisure hours. The activities of the Electronics Club were inaugurated by Sri. Harish, Principal, Sri Mahaveera Pre University College, Moodbidri.

Our students of E&C Engg (members of Electronics Club) Mr. Ganesh Prasad, Mr. Mahesh B, Mr.Peter Marvin, Mr. Vijay Monis, Miss. Lipiya K.M.,Miss. Sujaya, have participated in the paper presentation contest on “Nano Technology”, “Mobile Communication”, and “PLC Application” held at Thiru Seven Hills Polytechnic, Maduravoyal, Chennai, on 4th February 2008.

Achievements in Sports & Games:

Our students have participated in the Kabaddi and Volley ball tournaments conducted by Sarvajanika Sri Ganeshotsava Samithi, Moodbidri.

Our Polytechnic Cricket team participated in the Inter Polytechnic Tennis Ball Cricket Tournament conducted by Dr.T.M.A.Pai Polytechnic, Manipal held on 2nd February 2008 at M.G.M. College grounds, Udupi, and bagged the first prize, i.e. is a Cash prize of Rs.5,555/-

Our students have participated in the Academy Games competitions organized by the Academy of General Education, Manipal held at Sri Bhuvanendra College, Karkala on 4th and 5th February 2008. Our students have participated in the 31st State Level Inter-Polytechnic Athletic Meet held from 22nd February to 23rd February 2008 at K.L.E.S.Polytechnic, Hubli, and I am proud to mention that our team performed very well in the Meet. The participants are: Sriyuths Sukesh Amin, Don B.John, Nagaraj S, Niranjana, Charanraj, and Royston Joy R.D Souza. Nagaraj Sapaliga of I DAE has won the Gold Medal in Long Jump and Bronze Medal in Triple Jump. On behalf of the Management and staff, I congratulate all the athletes.

Annual Sports meet:

The Annual Sports Meet of this academic year was held on Saturday, the 8th March 2008 at G.V.Pai Memorial Stadium, Moodbidri. Mr.Kaushalendra Kumar, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Panambur, Mangalore, inaugurated the Sports Meet. Mr. Nagaraja Sapaliga of I year Automobile Engg. and Miss. Sunitha Ithal of I year E&C Engg. have emerged as Men’s and Women’s individual Champions. While congratulating them I would like to thank the principal, staff members & students of M.K.Anantharaj D.P.Ed., and to Mr.Shamith Rao, Physical Director, for their kind co-operation, and to our students for their participation in this sports meet.

Seminar held:

A Seminar on “ Employment opportunities in Electronics & Communication Field ” for the final year Diploma students of E.& C. Engineering branch was held on 9th October 2007 at 3PM. Sri Hithesh, Lecturer in E. & C. Engineering, N.M.A.M. Institute of Technology, Nitte was the resource person. He spoke to our students about the employment opportunities for the Diploma Engineers.

Student Internet World 2007:

A special education program “Student Internet World 2007” sponsored by the Department of Education, Government of Karnataka was conducted successfully in this Polytechnic from 30th October to 1st November 2007 for the students of local High Schools. About 80 computers were provided with the internet connections for this purpose. We have conducted this program smoothly with the co-operation of our teaching & non- teaching staff members and student volunteers. This education program has benefited about 1400 students of the neighboring High Schools. The theory sessions were conducted with the help of audio-visuals. In the feedback, the students expressed their gratitude to the Management as well as the Govt authorities for organizing such a useful program.

Tie-up with Oracle:

As our Polytechnic is tied up with Oracle Academy, Mr. Vinod Kumar K., H.O.D. of Computer Science & Engg has undergone online training by Oracle Academy, and also a week long intense training at PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore. He is now training our students on the syllabus as prescribed by the D.T.E, in consultation with Oracle Academy.

Building construction work/ repairs:

The extension of hydraulic laboratory by construction of an additional room has been completed by the end of February 2008. New foundry laboratory is also constructed. A new environment laboratory is set up in order to conduct the practical classes of Civil Engineering. The management has arranged for the beautification of the College premises by construction of a garden in front of our Polytechnic.

Uniforms:

Uniforms have been introduced to all the students of our Polytechnic from this academic year onwards to maintain uniformity in the dress code. All the staff and students are provided with identity cards.

Activities of N.S.S unit:

The N.S.S activities for this academic year were commenced from 3rd August 2007. Sri Sudarshan, Lecturer in Commerce, Sri Mahaveera College, Moodbidri inaugurated the activities for this year. Principal Sri J.J.Pinto presided over the function. N.S.S activities are being conducted on every Saturdays in the afternoon sessions and on holidays. Sri Surendra Kava, Lecturer in Automobile Engineering is appointed as the N.S.S Officer for this academic year. The N.S.S.unit leaders are Mr. Subrahmanya Ganiga and Miss.Sujaya of III DE&C.

The Annual Special camp of N.S.S.unit of S.N.M.Polytechnic was held in the premises of Govt Composite High School, Neerkere, Tenka Mijar, Mangalore Taluk from 5th December 2007 to 14th December 2007. Sri K.Abhayachandra Jain, Chairman of our Governing Council, inaugurated the special camp. Prof. T.K.Mohan, Secretary, S.M.C.Trust, Moodbidri, Sri Gunapala Hegde, Head Master and Smt. Rita D Souza, In-Charge Head Mistress of Govt. Composite High School, Neerkere were the Chief Guests. Sri J.J.Pinto, Principal, presided over the function.

The valedictory function of this special camp was held on 14th December 2007. Sri K.Amaranath Shetty, member, S.M.C.Trust was the Chief Guest. Valedictory function was presided over by Sri J.J.Pinto, Principal. Sri Harish, Principal, Sri Mahaveera Pre University College, Moodbidri and.

Smt.Sujatha Mudradi, President, Pragathi Education Foundation, Moodbidri were the Chief Guests. A blood donation camp was held on Saturday, the 6th October 2007 at 9.30AM in our Polytechnic. This camp was jointly organized by N.S.S unit of S.N.M.P, Lions Club of Moodbidri and Indian Red Cross Society, Moodbidri.
 
Official visit of Inspection Committee:

Sri Babu Devadiga, Selection Grade Lecturer in Polymer Engineering, Karnataka Polytechnic, Mangalore visited this Polytechnic on 14th November 2007 for the verification of Internal Assessment marks of Semester (Nov) 2007 examinations.

An Inspection Committee headed by Sri Sri H.U.Talwar, Deputy Director (CDC), D.T.E., Bangalore along with other team members visited this institution, on 13th December 2007, for the verification of the service details as well as original documents of teaching & non- teaching staff members in connection with the Grant-in-aid from the Government of Karnataka.

An Inspection Committee headed by Sri S.T.Rajappa, Joint Director (ATS), Directorate of Technical Education, Bangalore, along with his team members visited our Polytechnic on 11th March 2008 for an inspection in connection with the affiliation from the Board of Technical Examinations, for the academic year 2007-08 and for the extension of approval by A.I.C.T.E., New Delhi for the academic year 2008-09.

The members of the Inspection Committee expressed their satisfaction about the functioning of various departments and the academic activities. The performance of students in the examinations in this Polytechnic was highly appreciated by the inspecting team. I thank Dr. H. Shantharam, Administrative Officer, Academy of General Education Manipal, Sri K.Abhayachandra Jain, Chairman of Governing Council of S.N.M.P., and Prof.T.K.Mohan, Secretary, Sri Mahaveera College Trust, Moodbidri for their presence during this inspection.

I thank the officials of All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi, for extending their approval for the year 2007-08. I thank the Director of Technical Education, Bangalore for extending the affiliation to our institution, for this academic year and for the admission approval. I also thank the Secretary, Board of Technical Examinations Bangalore for the support and co-operation to conduct Annual/ Supplementary/Semester examinations at this exam Centre.

Scholarships:

The Moodbidri Co-operative Service Bank Ltd., Moodbidri has awarded cash prizes to the best outgoing students of 2006-07 of five Diploma branches namely, Automobile Engg, E&C Engg, E&E Engg, Mechanical Engg and Computer Science & Engg.

The Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation Ltd., Bangalore has sanctioned an educational loan of Rupees 10,000/- each to six students of this institution.

The Labour Welfare Organization, Bangalore has sanctioned the financial assistance to the wards of
beedi workers Rs.3,000/- each to 59 students.

The Sitaram Jindal Foundation Bangalore has sanctioned a scholarship of Rs.3,000/- to Mr. Manjunatha of I year D.M.E.
 
Free Mid-day Meal:

During this academic year 25 economically poor students of all branches are provided with free mid-day meals. Sri S.M. Rafiq, a well wisher of S.N.M. Polytechnic has agreed to bear the entire expenses of the mid-day meal to all these students.

I sincerely thank all the donors of the Mid-day meal facility for their generous contribution and kind support. We anticipate such co-operation in the years to come.

Placement assistance to the Diploma holders through Campus interviews:

M/s Ace Manufacturing Systems, Bangalore has conducted a campus interview on 19th February 2008 for the final year Diploma students of Mechanical Engineering. About 18 students of our Polytechnic attended the interview.

M/s Surzlon Energy Limited, Udupi has conducted a campus interview for the students of final year Diploma in E&E Engg and Mechanical Engg branches on 27th February 2008. About 94 students of this Polytechnic, N R A M Polytechnic Nitte and S.N.S.Polytechnic, Sunkadakatte have attended this interview. On 7th March 2008 M/s Mando Brakes Systems India Limited, Chennai have conducted campus interview at S.N.M.Polytechnic for the final year diploma students. The final year Diploma students of Automobile Engg, E&C Engg, E&E Engg and Mechanical Engg branches of this Polytechnic, and students of Dr.T.M.A.Pai Polytechnic, Manipal, N.R.A.M. Polytechnic, Nitte, S.N.S.Polytechnic, Sunkadakatte and Indira Shiva Rao Polytechnic, Udupi have attended the interview. The results of these interviews are awaited. Few more reputed industries are in the pipelinefor the similar events ahead.

Condolence & grievances:

It is regretted that our beloved Chairman of Governing Council Sri S.N.Diwakar left us to his heavenly abode on 11th September 2007. A condolence meeting was held in our Polytechnic on 13th September 2007. Sri. B. Padmaraj, Trustee and a member of our purchase committee passed away on 18th January 2008. We pray Almighty to rest their souls in Peace and to grant them eternal life. We thankfully acknowledge the generous donations of Rs.10000 from our Trust towards the treatment of Sri. Radhakrishna Bhat, an office staff of our Polytechnic who had met with an accident. Our staff members also accumulated a sum of Rs. 12050. My sincere thanks are due to all our staff members for generating a contribution of Rs. 10000 which was collected for a good cause of installation of a bronze statue of Sri. S D Samrajya, our former Chairman of the Governing Council, at Shirthady.

Various Competitions held:


In connection with the Annual Day Celebrations various competitions were held. The Fancy Dress Competition was held on Saturday, the 3rd March 2008, at S.N.M.P. auditorium. An Essay Competition both in English & in Kannada was held on 6th March 2008. The department wise talents day competitions were held on 7th March 2008 in the Polytechnic auditorium. Various cultural competitions like singing, skits, Film & Folk dance, Bharatanatya, folk songs, devotional songs etc. were organized. The Department of E&E Engg, Automobile Engg, and E&C Engg Departments have secured First, Second, Third prizesrespectively. The Pick & Speak and Pick & Act competitions were held on 12th March 2008 and Elocution competition on 13th March 2008.
 
Other Activities/ events:

The Flag Hoisting Ceremony was held both at SMC and at S.N.M.Polytechnic, on 15th August 2007, on the occasion of Independence Day. All the teaching & non teaching staff members and students were present. Sri J.J.Pinto, Principal hoisted the flag at S.N.M. Polytechnic. After the flag hoisting ceremony cultural activities were organized at Sri Mahaveera college. The Republic day celebrations were held at SMC on 26th an. 2008 and all our staff members were present on the occasion. Ayudha Pooja program was held in the Polytechnic premises on 20th October 2007. The Supplementary/ Semester (Nov) 2007 examinations were held at this Polytechnic during the months of November & December 2007. Practical examinations were held between 2nd November to 14th November 2007 and theory examinations were held between 19th November 2007 to 3rd December 2007, as per the schedule of the Board of Technical Examinations, Bangalore.

I thank Sri Shivaprasad Hegde, Proprietor, Manjushree Driving School, for his gift to the Lucky staff of this year. I thank all the well wishers of our institution.

Conclusion:

Before concluding this report, I would like to thank the President of our Trust Sri K.K.Pai and all the members of the Trust who are readily accessible for any help & advice to our institution. I thank the Chairman of our Governing Council Sri K.Abhayachandra Jain, the Treasurers of S.M.C. Trust Sri P.S.Bhat and Sri B.Vittal Baliga, Secretary Prof. T.K.Mohan, members of Governing Council Dr.L.C.Soans, Dr.H.Shantharam, the Senior Principal, Karnataka Polytechnic, Mangalore for their guidance and co-operation in each & every aspects of our efforts to bring up this institution. I recognize the selfless & sincere services of all my colleagues, both teaching and non-teaching, without their unconditional support this institution would not have grown to this level. I will be failing in my duty if I do not mention the co-operation and disciplined attitude of the office bearers of our students’ council and all the students. Also I pray for the health & happiness of all those who have directly or indirectly helped for the development of this institution.
